10th-17th February 2002, in aid of Mencap.
by Amanda Williams
Some time around April 2001, I saw an advertisement for the Mencap Nile Bike Ride, and decided that a 420 km ride over 5 days through hot desert might be quite a fun thing to do. At that point, February 2002 seemed a very long way into the future, but the months that followed were so busy with training, fundraising, and purchasing essential items (cycling shorts, water bottles, immodium...) that the trip very soon came round. What follows is my recollection of events on the trip, written on a daily basis (good thing too, because by the end of the week I had no idea what had happened at the beginning!), and only slightly embellished by subsequent impressions.
I have also added some information about my sponsors, whose generosity has enabled me to raise a total so far of £3,481.68 for Mencap - thank you!.
